Lesson: Japan Prepares for War

Japan treads a cautious path as tensions simmer between China and Taiwan. Its geographic proximity and security concerns fuel preparations for potential conflict. Although we don’t hear about it much in Japan, drills simulate defending against invasion while increased troop presence and enhanced medical capabilities signal readiness. Japan has increased its defence spending to the largest since WWII. Also, quiet measures are underway to prepare local authorities for refugee influxes, and awareness campaigns emphasize disaster readiness. Despite preparations, what Japan will do in the event of war is not known. Perhaps even the government doesn’t know what it will do. This country is located in a complex geopolitical landscape, similar to that of Poland in Europe. While conflict looms, Japan hopes for stability and prepares for the unthinkable.
